Edward wasn't scaling up the dorms. He wasn't that bloody ill-prepared. What he was, though, was bored - bored enough to try and see just how difficult it would be, scaling up the building. Or getting out of it. It was a fairly tall building and if it caught fire--

It'd be nice to know another way out.

So he'd climbed into the window and was now sat perched on the windowsill, glancing down, occasionally trying a ledge with his foot while the lizard part of his mind tried to make out a path that wouldn't end in certain disaster.

Just another old day in the dorms.

"What is wrong with you?" Four gasped from the doorway.

Edward stuck his head back into the room and squinted at him. "Good to see you too, mate."

"You're out a window," Four pointed out, just in case Edward hadn't noticed.

"Just making sure I can make my way out as well as in," Edward said casually. "Can't go stickin' to the old ways thinking they'll last us."

That, Four could definitely understand. "I did that a few weeks ago," he admitted. "Figured out most of the ways in and out of the building and off the island."

That was a bit more paranoid than Edward - he just wanted to be sure he could leave the building, and two exits was more than enough for him. "Besides, I've climbed up worse than this," he said. "And fallen off without doing myself great injury."

"So have I," Four said with a small smile, "but it doesn't mean I tempt fate about it."

"We've all got to tempt fate from time to time," Edward said, hopping back into the room. "It's good for the spirit, if nothing else."

"I'm Dauntless," Four said. "I don't flinch away from danger, but I don't go chasing it down, either. We have a short enough life span as it is."

"Dauntless?" Edward said, shooting him an amused look. "Ah, I'm sure we can find something that daunts you in a tavern somewhere."

"Any time," Four said, grinning. "I can drink and fight just fine."

"That's what they all say," Edward said. "Mostly when they've already got the drink in them, mind you."

Four smiled again. "I don't need to be drunk to know I can handle myself."

"Get in a lot of fights, do you?" Edward said, sitting down on his bed, looking amused.

"Yeah," Four said with a little shrug. "It's part of Dauntless initiation works. Hand-to-hand, then with weapons."

Edward squinted at him. "Wait," he said, "This isn't some word you're just throwing about, is it? What are you talking about?"

"It's my faction at home," Four explained. "Dauntless--the Brave Ones. A bit like a tribe, I guess. Society's divided into five factions to stop human nature from killing each other again."

"I think I missed some steps in this tale of yours," Edward said, after a brief pause and with a small chuckle.

Four chuckled too, happier and more at ease than normal. "Sorry. I forget who's heard this song and dance. At home, the only thing left is the city I live in: humanity turned on itself a few centuries back and basically killed themselves. Our ancestors built a big wall and came up with the faction system, pretty much divided along the major personality traits of all of our citizens. Dauntless decided people weren't brave enough under the old system and our training tries to negate that problem."

It sounded both like a fiction and a very dubious way in which to tackle such a problem; Edward frowned. "So instead of divvying up people based on their birth, you've moved to doing so based on their character?" he asked. "How's that working out for you?"

"Pretty good," Four said with a shrug. "We haven't had a war in generations."

"Seems a bit dull," Edward noted. "Is it hard to move between groups?"

"You only get the chance to switch once," Four said. "In a Choosing Ceremony when you're 16. You get to take a test to see which faction might be the best fit for you, then you choose in front of the entire society. Faction before blood--it doesn't matter where your family came from; it's where you belong that matters."

Edward still looked skeptical, but then, it sounded a bit far away to his ears. "And that stays the same all your life?"

"Generally," Four said. "Dauntless don't tend to have the highest lifespans ever..."

"You sound disposable," Edward said. "At least, to the ones who are running things around there."

"We're the soldiers and the police," Four said. "Our jobs are to protect the others because they don't have the temperaments to do it for themselves."

"Who determines what goes in this test of yours?" Edward asked.

"It's been tested and tweaked by the Erudite," Four said. "They're our educators and scientists. You're presented with a series of scenarios and the choices you make give you the faction you'd match best with. Of course, you're not required to choose the faction you're matched with, but I think most do."

Edward let out a snort. "Not so different from my time after all, then."

"Oh?" Four replied, leaning in the doorway. "How so?"

"The people who hoard the knowledge dictate things for the rest of you," Edward said. "You can run out of pace, but you don't get treated too well if you try, I'd imagine."

Four's lips quirked up. "Not especially well, no. The facionless are hardly thought of as human at all by most people."
